Q. What happens at the session?

A. Everyone arrives, sets up and ready to play at the start time. Often we work from a 'GRID' sheet - a piece of paper which tells you when to play but not what to play. Typically after a quick hello chat, two longer improvisations happen (say 30mins). The whole group are involved, with different people playing at different times. The music is all improvised and covers a wide range. Some parts have clear tonality, rhythms and grooves, while other parts are much more open, 'experimental', exploring the sounds and textures – it's all good. The most important thing is to listen to what other people are doing and then to contribute and interact with them. They should be doing the same with you.

Q. I need to have done this before or to be an experienced improviser?

A. No

Q. What kind of instruments is it for?

A. Answer any instruments including electronics or voice.

Q. What if I make a mistake?

A. Don't worry about it! Improvisation is about exploring, so trying things out and making mistakes (if you want to call them that) is absolutely expected. Some bits will be more interesting than others. It's a friendly environment and people are interested in interacting to create rather than judging each other.

Q. What Do I need to bring?

A. You need to bring your instruments, whatever they might be and a little amplifier if that's appropriate e.g. for guitar. Think moderate volume. We don't generally use/ have a house PA and there isn't a technician. A stopwatch - normally on your phone - is very useful.
